Commander Shepard's journey came to an end, last week, Mass Effect 3's final DLC named Citadel. It was a fond farewell, in my opinion, to one of the greatest franchises in gaming history. Bioware and the Mass Effect team had one final sendoff and roundtable and took to Twitter so we could virtually join them, 140 characters at a time. It was great to reminisce with fans and the amazing people who created this game.
As this was going on, I began thinking of my time with the Mass Effect series and how it was the characters, frienships and romances that truly made this game for me. I then took it one step further and wanted to start a discussion about these supporting characters, not just from Mass Effect, but from any game. What characters deserve the spotlight and the glory alongside the likes of Mario, Master Chief and of course, Commander Shepard? I'll give you three of mine and some honorable mentions to get you started.
Garrus Vakarian - Mass Effect 1, 2 & 3
It wasn't so much about going into battle with him that sold me on this character, but the little moments. I won't go into spoilers, but the last conversation with Garrus before the ending of Mass Effect 3 was one of the highlights of my gaming career. It could have felt forced, cheesy, or empty, but it was so genuine and heartfelt. It was a conversation that was a result of highs and lows over three games and when it came to fruition, it was perfect.
Yoshi - Mario Franchise
This one crosses a line a little bit because Yoshi has starred in his own games, however, it goes to show the rewards you can reap when you create a character as iconic as Yoshi.
Clementine - The Walking Dead
She grows throughout the story and becomes more accustomed to this messed up world and seeing her transformation is both endearing and horrifying. Not only does the main character, Lee Everett, truly care about her, but you do as well. Once again, the writing is superb, the voice acting is on point, and everything comes together for one of the best supporting characters out there.
