Dark Gaming Secrets: What Game Haven't You Played That You Should Have?

Picture
Super Mario Brothers. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Tetris. These are games that if you haven't played, you aren't considered a "gamer". At least, that's what some people want you to think. There are those games that are considered the "holy grail" of video games, and for one reason or the other may have not had the pleasure of experiencing said game. I think it's time to reveal my top 3 games I have always regretted, and haven't liked to mention, not playing.

Bullying and the Silent Enemy

Picture
Cindy Lou.

What does this seemingly innocent name mean to you? For me, it reminds me of a childhood darkened by bullying. It recalls days of when I would fake being sick to not have to go to school and endure the ridicule and name calling that so many kids in this world have to deal with each and every day. It was a tough time in my life, yet one that I feel helped shape me into the man I am today. That's why when Minority Media announced their newest game, Silent Enemy, I was immediately intrigued.

Defending Songbird (BioShock Infinite Spoilers)

Picture
Anyone who has experienced the spectacle and grandeur that is Columbia knows very well what lurks just beyond the clouds. They know the cry of the massive Songbird, the one who was chosen to protect the "Lamb" from her "False Shepard".

They know of the stuffed songbirds that litter the streets, the nursery rhymes that invade everyday life, and the almost god-like reverence reminding each and everyone the great wonder and danger this majestic creature holds. Yet, is that fear warranted? Is Songbird truly evil, or just misunderstood? The answer may not be as simple as your think.

Nostalgia: Nothing to Fear

Picture
Nostalgia is a prickly emotion. We all love it; it is a powerful but dangerous force often integrated with our entertainment. In the past few years many different people have succeeded to sell our nostalgia to us.

It can create the impression that there is lack of creativity in entertainment and can also promote the sentiment that things aren’t as good as they used to be (ie: New Super Mario Bros is not as good as Super Mario World). It’s time we let go of these irrational comparisons and emotions.

Creative Assembly's Incredible Gesture to a Dying Fan

Picture
When you turn on the news or look through your Twitter feed, what do you see? A wonderful reminder of how horrible this world can be? People talking about what they ate today? Maybe even a new game announcement? Sure, some of these are great, interesting, or informative, but usually they are forgotten as soon as the next story rolls on. Today, however, was quite different. Today, I read a story about an act of kindness by Creative Assembly, the company behind the famed Total War franchise, that truly moved me. Tomb Raider and The Vulnerable Hero

Picture
When you think of gaming legends such as [Insert Name Here] Call of Duty hero, Nathan Drake and/or Master Chief, what comes to mind? Great, but why should we care about a victory when the road getting there wasn't all that bumpy? Lara Croft says we shouldn't and she plans on showing us that to reach the top of that mountain, you must first start from the very bottom.

The Two Moments That Brought Me Into Gaming. What Are Yours?

Picture
February 27th was my Birthday. I  turned 25 (and can rent a car!) and was thinking of a piece to write that looks back and honors my history in gaming. I began by thinking why I love games so much, and it became quite clear as to what I wanted to write about. I wanted to go back to the beginning and reflect on the first two real moments and games that started me down a road I still walk today. These games are Super Mario World for SNES and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for N64.

The Fragile Dance With Nostalgia
